Confession time: I was that person this year... My Christmas wreath was still adorning my front door well into March. Facepalm. Why? Because I had grand plans to create a new seasonal wreath but, as usual, procrastination got the best of me!
When I finally tackled the project, I was determined to avoid using glue. Previous wreaths taught me that glue can compromise longevity and cause decorations to fall apart over time. And of course, every great wreath needs a beautiful bow to complete the look.
So today I'm sharing my technique for creating a gorgeous, full bow without using a single drop of glue! Perfect for wreaths, gifts, home decor, or even hair accessories (though I'd recommend a smaller version for the latter).
What You'll Need
- Two coordinating ribbons (wired ribbon works best)
- Scissors
- Pipe cleaner or zip tie
- Your hands and a little patience!

Step-by-Step Bow Tutorial
Creating Your Loops
Step 1: Prepare your ribbon: Cut strips of ribbon approximately 20 inches long. You'll need 5-6 strips total between your two ribbon patterns. Form each into a loop by folding the ribbon back on itself.

Step 2: Form the base layer: Take three strips of your first ribbon choice. Arrange these three loops in a row—this will be your largest, bottom layer.

Step 3: Create the middle layer: Take two strips of your second ribbon and form loops in the same way. These will create your middle layer.

Step 4: Add the top layer: Use one strip of your first ribbon (matching your base layer) to create a single loop for the top.

Assembling Your Bow
Step 5: Make the center loop: Cut a small piece (about 4-5 inches) of one of your ribbons. Form it into a tiny loop with the ends overlapping at the back.

Step 6: Prepare your fastener: Slide a pipe cleaner or zip tie through this small loop. This will be what holds everything together.

Step 7: Begin gathering: Starting with the top layer, pinch the center of the loop.

Step 8: Continue gathering layers: While holding the top layer, grab the centers of the two middle loops, pinching everything together.

Step 9: Complete the gathering: Add the three base loops, pinching all layers together at the center point. Keep a firm grip!

Step 10: Secure with center loop: Take that small loop you created in steps 7-9 and wrap it around the pinched center of all your loops.

Step 11: Position correctly: Make sure the open end of the small loop faces inward—this helps it stay in place naturally.
Step 12: Fasten securely: While maintaining your grip on everything, use your free hand to tightly wind the pipe cleaner or zip tie around the center of the bow.

Step 13: Finalize: Twist the pipe cleaner ends together or tighten and trim the zip tie.
Step 14: Fluff and arrange: Gently pull and spread the loops to create a full, balanced bow. Adjust the loops until you're happy with how it looks.

Tips for Bow Success
- Use wired ribbon for easier shaping and a bow that holds its form
- Vary ribbon widths for added dimension (like a 2.5" ribbon paired with a 1.5" ribbon)
- Mix textures such as combining satin with burlap or mesh with velvet
- Don't stress about perfection - slightly uneven loops can add character!
- The pipe cleaner ends can be used to attach your bow directly to your wreath
Ways to Use Your No-Glue Bow
- Crown a beautiful wreath
- Top a special gift
- Decorate a mailbox
- Add flair to a stair banister
- Embellish a lantern
- Dress up a plain vase
- Attach to a headband (make a smaller version)
This glue-free method creates bows that truly last! I've had some survive multiple seasons of outdoor display without falling apart.
