DIY Sola Wood Flower Shadow Box: Elegant 3D Art in Minutes

There's something so elegant about the texture and dimension that sola wood flowers bring to home décor.

In my previous shadow box tutorial, I showed you how to create a stunning display using patterned paper. Today, I'm excited to share an elevated version that uses gorgeous dyed sola wood flowers to create a truly spectacular 3D effect!

This project makes a perfect personalized gift, wedding memento, or statement piece for your own home. The best part? It's surprisingly simple to create but looks like a high-end boutique purchase.

What Makes This Shadow Box Special

Unlike flat paper designs, sola wood flowers add incredible texture and dimension. They create natural shadows and depth that make your design literally pop off the wall. Plus, the deeper IKEA shadow box frame provides the perfect showcase for these delicate blooms.

Materials You'll Need

  • Deep shadow box frame (I used IKEA's SANNAHED shadow box)
  • Vinyl for your design (white works beautifully against colored flowers)
  • Paper insert that comes with the frame (for measuring)
  • Assorted dyed sola wood flowers in your chosen color palette

Materials for the Shadow Box

Tools:

  • Cutting machine (Cricut or Silhouette)
  • Transfer tape
  • Weeding tools
  • Scissors
  • Pencil or marker
  • Ruler
  • Sharpie or dry-erase marker (for marking placement)

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Prepare Your Design

Select or create an SVG design for your shadow box. Words, monograms, and simple silhouettes work beautifully with this technique. Size your design to fit your frame, leaving ample space (I recommend 2-3 inches) around the edges for flower placement.

Step 2: Find Your Center

Here's a designer trick for perfect centering:

  1. Take the paper insert that came with your frame
  2. Fold it in half both ways (creating quarter sections)
  3. The intersection of these folds marks the exact center of your frame
  4. Make a small mark at this center point

Pro Tip: My IKEA frame came with a protective film over the glass. I marked directly on this film with a Sharpie since it would be removed later. If your frame doesn't have protective film, use a dry-erase marker on the opposite side of the glass instead.

Step 3: Cut and Apply Your Design

  1. Cut your design on your Cricut or other cutting machine
  2. Weed away excess vinyl carefully
  3. Apply transfer tape to your design
  4. Position the design on your glass, aligning the center with the mark you made earlier
  5. Smooth the design onto the glass and remove the transfer tape

Designer Tip: For perfect centering, make a small cross on your transfer tape that aligns with the center of your design. Line this up with your center mark on the glass.

Step 4: Create Your Flower Arrangement

This is where the magic happens! Arrange your sola wood flowers on the backing of the shadow box frame:

  1. Start by laying out your flowers on a flat surface to create a pleasing arrangement
  2. Play with different flower sizes and shapes to create visual interest
  3. Consider the color flow—create a gentle gradient or clustered color blocks
  4. Leave some negative space around your vinyl design so it remains the focal point
  5. Ensure no flowers stick up too far (they should be flush or nearly flush with the glass)

Depth Tip: Remember that the shadow box has limited depth. Place flatter flowers in areas where the glass will meet them most closely, and reserve any fuller blooms for areas with more space.

Step 5: Secure Your Flowers

You have two options for securing your flowers:

Option A: Temporary Placement Simply arrange the flowers on the backing board without adhesive. This allows you to change the arrangement seasonally or reuse the flowers for other projects.

Option B: Permanent Attachment Use a strong craft glue to secure the flowers to the backing board for a permanent display.

Step 6: Assemble Your Shadow Box

  1. Carefully place the glass with your vinyl design back into the frame
  2. Add the backing with your arranged flowers
  3. Secure the back of the frame
  4. Stand back and admire your gorgeous creation!
